A DAY IN THE LIFE OF MICHAEL GELMAN

December, 2010

5:30 A.M.: Wake up, check e-mails, and go to online news and entertainment websites looking for stories.

6:00 A.M.: Have a triple-shot latte and eat breakfast.

7:00 A.M.: Arrive at WABC on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Head up to our fifth-floor production offices and sit down with one of the producers to go through the day’s newspapers for possible host chat items.

8:00 A.M.: Head down to Kelly’s dressing room to say hello, chat, and go over the show with our guests, Gwyneth Paltrow and Paula Abdul.

8:15 A.M.: Walk down to the Live studio for a walk-through of that day’s “Happy New You” segment about saving money in the New Year.

8:25 A.M.: Rehearse new contest, “Blizzard Blast Travel Trivia.”

8:35 A.M.: Take the elevator to the fifth floor, to Regis’s office to go over the morning news stories and potential host chat items.

8:45 A.M.: Regis and I grab the elevator down to the backstage dressing rooms, where the producers and I go over last-minute details about the show and the guests for the day.

8:50 A.M.: Say a quick hello to Paula Abdul.

8:54 A.M.: Stage manager, Julian Abo, cues me to walk into the studio for the audience warm-up.

8:55 A.M.: Walk onto the Live set to warm up the audience.

9:00 A.M.: (announcer) “. . . Regis Philbin and Kelly Ripa!” as our hosts walk onto the set. The start of another live show, Live ’s signature host chat commences.

10:00 A.M.: Another completed show.

10:02 A.M.: Record promos with hosts in the studio.

10:10 A.M.: Tape an interview with Roseanne Barr for a show later in the week.

10:20 A.M.: Head back upstairs to the office for my daily production meeting and review that day’s show with the staff. Then we look ahead to the rest of the week, month, and February sweeps.

12:00 noon : I eat soup at my desk for lunch while going over upcoming theme week with a producer.

12:30 P.M.: I interview a freelance producer for an upcoming special project.

1:30 P.M.: I have a meeting re: “Run across America” project.

2:30 P.M.: I meet with Disney marketing and sales people.

3:30 P.M.: I meet with our talent bookers re: guest bookings.

5:00 P.M. –6:00 P.M.: Individual meetings with producers on all of our upcoming initiatives, publicity issues, ideas, etc.

6:45 P.M.: Head home.
